PERIOD 4 - UPRISING!

Between July 22nd and September 12th of 1942, the German authorities deported more than 400,000 Jews who were living in the Warsaw ghetto. The Germans then began the second phase of their operation to remove the remaining Jews from the Warsaw ghetto on April 19, 1943, the eve of Passover. The renewal of deportations was the signal for an armed uprising within the ghetto. The German command originally estimated that it would only take them a few days to put down the resistance. Standing against tanks and seasoned combat troops, the Uprising lasted for more than a month. In your post cite what you learned that you did not know before watching the film.

I am really enjoying the film. For me, the film provides a sense of justice in the uprising of the Jews against the Nazis. I don't know if my feelings are justified, but it felt good every time I saw a Nazi getting shot. I also enjoyed the film because of its story. It humanized what I had known about Nazi treatment of the Jews. I felt as though I was living in the conditions shown in the film.

I liked this film because it showed a side of the Holocaust that we wouldn't normally see. It showed the Jews as people that were not going to be taken over by people who thought they were better. I thought the story was easy to follow and the characters were very relatable which made the film seem more real.

This film gave me hope. The violence was really difficult to watch but I'm glad that the Jewish people fought back and stood up for themselves. I viewed their resistance as self defense, but then I had an internal conflict: is it fair to fight back with violence? That was the original problem. I was thinking yes, because peaceful protests weren't working, but then no because it's never okay to kill another person. But then again, the Nazis were killing people for no reason, and the Jewish resistance was trying to protect themselves. But then again, some who joined the Nazi party were, too. They would rather join the cause than be subject to it's terrors.

I really enjoyed this film because I feel like more people need to know about the Warsaw Uprising because not a lot of people do. I thought that the movie was cool because it showed the empowerment and the success that they had when the stood up and fought back against the Nazis.

I had been previously unaware of a large-scale uprising in the Warsaw ghetto--the most I had associated with the name was the Warsaw Pact, a decidedly less positive term than the Warsaw uprising. The film was gripping, to say the least; perhaps one of the few cases where violence was more than just warranted, but outright necessary, learning that the historical events it was based on actually inspired other uprisings gave me faith in the strength of a people over tyranny. At some point--at some extreme points, that is--all bets are off.

I agree with Erin in that this film shows a side of this war that is not normally addressed. The Jews were fighters and the way that this film portrays not only the men, but the women as well, is amazing. They never gave up and these people wanted their freedom. Their strength is truly admirable and i'm so glad I got to see this.

I agree with Catie I felt the exact same thing in regaurds to the violence and the choice the ZOB was faced to make. Because the peaceful protests weren't working, and even though the nazis were killing people there was some who still didnt feel comfortable with using violence

Nick, I wasn't aware you were in this class. I still agree that the film did help humanize the efforts of the Jews; they tend to be more of a title, a vague and shadowy abstract concept declared only by history books and bland text. Film puts a more realistic spin on some things.

Having been previously aware of the scale of the uprising, the actual facts did not come as a surprise to me. However, I am always shocked by the representations of the personal bravery and persistence of the Jews who repeatedly snuck in and out of the ghetto and faced their oppressors. While the acts of violence never surprise me, I was especially moved by the initial train scene during the mass liquidation in which the children sang as they boarded. It was hard to hold back tears in class.

I was surprised by the courage of the Jewish people in this movie. I thought that it was really interesting how one of the Jewish girls repeatedly pretended to be German in order to help support her family. This action along with the actual uprising is something that I was not previously aware of. I always thought that the Jewish people just took the abuse and never realized that many of them retaliated.

I had no idea that the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto were organized and started an uprising against the Nazis. I was surprised by how bold they were, given the situation they were in, and was impressed by the amount of damage they were able to cause to the Nazis from inside the ghetto.

I unfortunately missed most of the film because of the Junior College Fair, but from what I saw, I had no idea that there were any uprisings, especially that lasted that long. From what I had previously learned was mostly just immediate submission to the Germans. Warsaw and all other uprisings were never really mentioned. I found it amazing that the Jewish people were able to sufficiently hold off the Germans for 30 days, when the Germans believed that they could easily get rid of them all within a few days. It showed a much stronger side of the Jewish people than any course has ever taught me.

This was an eye opening film, in terms of seeing on screen the actors portraying the uprising and the monthlong battle that held back the Nazi's for only so long. It was a riveting experience to watch, after so much bad news and horrible events reviewed through the documentaries... Granted ultimately the uprising was put down, it was still a pleasure to know that some did not die in vain and died for something they believed in.

Colleen King said...

I agree with Luke, I was surprised at how brave they were especially under the conditions they were currently under and their impending future conditions.

Nick Lanciani said...

As for something more concrete that i never knew, well I guess I could say that I never was so aware of how close and how horrible things were brought to children and whatnot. I would have to agree with Luke's general statement, which can be summed up to say that I too was surprised at the level of organization the Jews exemplified.

I didnt know that the jews fought back. I always thought they just let the Germans take over. I was amazed by what the jews actually did.

I think it was great that the Jews were able to fight back. It showed the viewers that there were people who tried to fight back and did succeed. It was great to see that some Nazi's got what they deserved.

i was not in class on one day during this film, even though i did not see the whole movie, i got the main idea. Before watching this movie I had no idea that the Jewish people were able to resist and the against Nazi's who were imprisoning them. I think this film was unique from everything we have seen so far in that it didn't depict the Jewish people as helpless and completely willing to take the Nazis abuse without any form of retaliation, but instead this film showed the Jewish people fighting for themselves

While eatching this fill i learned many things such as: There were jewish people who did actually fight back which i never knew before. I didnt know that they also had there meetings in the basement. Another thing that i didnt know was that the killing camps they had were always running and they never shut down until the Nazi's movement was ended.

Danielle Neuwirth said...

I did not know how bad the living the conditions were in the ghettos. I was really proud that the jews got the courage to retaliate against the natzis. It is so sad. I agree with Catie too

Julia Heffernan said...

I agree with Danielle that I was not aware of how bad the living conditions for the Jews were and how violently and unfairly they were treated. I am happy that some people decided to stand up to the Nazis.

Before I watched this film, I was unaware that Jewish people were able to obtain weapons and fight the German's for such an extended period of time. I had assumed that an uprising would have only lasted a day before being put down by the Nazi's. The fact that they were able to hold them off for so long is impressive and courageous.

Kevin Neil said...

I didn't know that the Jewish Police and much of the upper echelon of the Jewish hierarchy was considered traitors amongst the Jewish fighting forces. I didn't realize that so much smuggling and planning went into the uprising; typically the only footage we see is of suffering and despair. It was refreshing to see the Jewish people rise up against all of the injustice.

Zach Mason said...

ONce again i was awed at the living conditions for the Jews in the ghetto. They tried doing whatever it took to survive and that included taking clothes off of those lying dead in the streets. I was very happy to see that people never gave up and even decided to fight back and organize a way to retrieve weapons in order to stand up against the Natzi soldiers in the ghetto.

Phoebe Evans said...

i learned so much from this film. It was so inspiring to see that the jews didnt just sit around and wait for death. Before this movie i didnt know there was ever an organized attempt at freedom. Despite how much this film upset me sometimes, it was important to see what exactly they went through. From being forced into the ghetto, joining the resistance, being taken to death camps, and being murdered. I liked learning about the other parts of the Holocaust (like the upraising and the ghettos) becuase before facing history i thought that mainly all the bad things were occuring in the death camps.
