Between July 22nd and September 12th of 1942, the German authorities deported more than 400,000 Jews who were living in the Warsaw ghetto. The Germans then began the second phase of their operation to remove the remaining Jews from the Warsaw ghetto on April 19, 1943, the eve of Passover. The renewal of deportations was the signal for an armed uprising within the ghetto. The German command originally estimated that it would only take them a few days to put down the resistance. Standing against tanks and seasoned combat troops, the Uprising lasted for more than a month. In your post cite what you learned that you did not know before watching the film.

Before watching this film I had briefly heard of the warsaw ghetto uprising but I really had no idea how successful the group was. It amazes me that they were able to coordinate with one another and sneak in ammunition/weapons in a time of such danger and high security. These people risked their lives everyday to fight for a great cause. They were very strong and smart people who knew they must be proactive about their lives or else the Nazi's would take them away. They gave the Jewish people a glimmer of hope and knowledge that they could try to fight back the Nazi's!
I learned about another aspect of the Holocaust that I did not know before, which was the perspective of people who resisted. Before watching this I just thought of the Jews as being so victimized that it wasn't even possible for them to retaliate, yet this film showed me that even though they barely had any hope, they used what they had to fight back. The strong sense of community also surprised me, mostly the fact that they were able to remain united when in such a terrible situation. Maybe that sense of community is because most of the people shown in the movie lost their families and had no one else. It's possible that they were so motivated to participate in the "uprising" because they literally had nothing to lose other than their own life (no younger siblings to take care of, no families to feed, ect.)
I agree with Johanna, I have respect for those people who risked their lives to fight for a great cause. Their feat was symbolic as well, and made it seem as if all was not lost.
I was out for the last day of the film; however, before watching the film I was unaware of any Jewish uprising. It was difficult for me to see how horribly the Jews were treated in the Ghettos my the soldiers, but inspiring to see the Jews fight back.
Before watching the film, I didn't know that large groups of Jews could be that successful when standing up against the Germans. It must have been terrifying to go against such a large group of people that are only trying to kill everyone that isn't like them. It was really inspiring to watch the Jews come together and make a plan to make a difference in what was happening around them.
I agree with Johanna on how amazing it was that they were able to coordinate a large group of Jews and steal weapons in order to protect themselves and their people. It must have been very difficult to go through what they had to suffer.
I learned how successful the resistance was inside of the Warsaw ghetto. I had known that the fighting lasted for a couple of months, but I had no idea that it invovled larger scale battles and not just small skirmishes.
Before watching the film i did not know that the Warshaw ghetto were able to fight against Germans. I learned that they were successful in what they did because they were strong Jews who believed in the cause. They were motivated to do so because they had weapons and more people joining.
I agree with Silverman in that I had always though of the Jews as being victimized and succumbing to the Nazis will. It was cool to see that there was a very large group of Jews that resisted
Before watching the film I was unaware that there were any large scale uprisings that were successful.
I agree with Catherine that it was hard to watch the film when it was showing how the guards were just abusing the jews for fun and how violent everything was.
Before watching the film I did not know that the Jewish leadership within the ghetto was strongly opposed to an opposition because of the retaliations that had occurred from previous anti-nazi activism.
I agree with Tom, I never really expected large combat, I had just expected small scale ambushes on a few nazi soldiers at a time.

i agree with johanna. i agree that people risk their lives everyday for a good cause.
I really liked this movie Because it was really cool how some of the Jewish people finally faught back to protect them selves and they actually did pretty well
I agree with Sam that the groups might have felt a sense of community when brought together to fight for themselves. I was also wondering if there were any other major uprisings among the many other ghettos.
I never realzied how hard people tried to resist the nazis. I didn't realize what success they had even though the whole country wasn't feeling the affects. At times I felt like the uprising group was just as bad as the Nazis by shooting them randomly but I came to realize that in such tough circumstance it was a result of uncontrolable anger.
Before the film I wasn't aware of how many Jewish people were willing to risk their lives to fight.
I agree with Sam, i wasnt aware of the perspective from jewish people from the film. I had only learned facts and never from their perspective.

I didnt realize before the film that people who were part of the german army were willing to help Jewish people like one of the characters.
I agree with Avalon that i wasnt aware of how successful large groups like the ones in the movie could be against and even larger group like the german army.

I knew about the uprising however, i did not know that there was such a large battle going on right in the middle of the city. To see such a small amount of people hold off the advances of the germans for 3 months is nothing less than astonishing. The tactics and strategies used against them were quite interesting to see.
I agree with Johanna. This uprising was very important in the literal and metaphorical sense for the jewish people. Giving people hope throughout the horrible attrocities throughout the holocaust is just as important as trying to fight for their lives.
I did not know how strong the resistance was nor did I know how successful they were in smuggling things into the ghetto before watching this movie. It was really surprising that they were able to fight back so effectively even though the force they were facing was much larger, more well equipped, and more well fed than they were. It was also very surprising that they were able to smuggle so many weapons, explosives, and other things into the ghetto.
From watching uprising I got to see how exactly it was for jews in poland and more specifically in the warsaw ghetto, it gave me a precise point of view of a jew during that time and what they had to go through. I learned exactly how the germans deported them and how the jews reacted to it initially and the reprocussions of deporting the jews which was the rebellion, something I didn't know about at all until this film. Seeing the living conditions in the ghetto made me even more sympathetic then I already was, something I thought wasn't reachable already.

it was inspiring to watch the Jews rise against the Nazis in the ghetto. I found myself rooting for the Jews. It was a great film to watch.
I agree with Sam. I didn't think it was possible for them to retaliate, but this movie proved me wrong.
