PERIOD 3 - THE LONGEST HATRED
You recently viewed the PBS documentary The Longest Hatred in class. Please share what you learned from the film with the class. What did you learn that you did not know before watching the film?

I learned a lot of things from the film since my knowledge on religions is rather limited. I did not previously know that both Jesus and Mary were Jews and that many of their first followers were Jewish as well. I also learned that the idea of Jews being forced to wear a yellow star was not an idea that the Nazi's created. This idea was adopted from Catholics a long time ago. They made Jews wear yellow pieces of fabric to highlight the Jews in the community. Lastly, I learned that the anti semetic idea has been around for a very long time.
After watching the film, I learned a lot about the different religions. I was not very knowlegable about the Jewish and Catholic religions. It surprised me that the Nazis took ideas that have previously been used. I had always thought that they decided to hate the Jews and exterminate them. The yellow stars idea came from the Catholics a long time ago. The Nazis used other peoples ideas in order to form their leadership and power across Germany.
I agree with Jesse on the fact that I also was not aware that both Jesus and Mary were Jews and that many of their first followers were Jewish as well. This surprises me because of the different religions and the disagreements between them. My knowledge of religion was advanced from watching this film.
I thought that this film was very interesting. I did not know that there was such a division between religions and that it had such a significant effect upon history. I also thought that it was interesting how the Nazis used the yellow star idea. It's strange to think that much of what the Nazis did was not their own idea but recycled from the past. I agree with what Jenna said about how the Nazis used other peoples' ideas to form their leadership.
After watching the film, I realized how weird it was that the Jewish and Catholic religons used to be the "sister" religions and had similar practices. I was shocked to learn that the Nazi's took previous ideas. I has always thought that Hitler was the one who decided to "get rid of" the Jews. I thought the Nazi's has created the yellow star idea and didn't know it was made up by the Catholics long ago.
I found this documentary was very informative and I learned a lot about the origins of Hitler's ideas. Before watching this film, I never realized that Hitler did not come up with his ways of exterminating the Jews and making them stand out in public with the yellow stars. Those ideas and most of the ideas the Nazi's used were from the Catholics who started the hatred of Jews way before the Nazi's did. It's sad to think that there has been so much hatred toward a religion for so many years.

Another thing that i found interesting and new was that the ideology of the Nazi party was in fact a belief and practice of Catholics long before the Nazi party was around. Personally i found that retaining a lot of the factual information hard to do because there was so much going on but it was strange to see the relationship between Judaism and Christianity.

I never knew that the Nazis took they methods and ideas to take control over Germany from methods that were used so long ago. I agree with Laura in the fact that it is very disrturbing how long hatred for Jews has been along for. It's sad to think that for so many years to go by, and the same hatred and anti sematic beliefs to still be prevalent, is very shocking. I have learned a couple of new facts after watching this film in class. I didn't know that the Nazi party hadn't come up with the yellow star idea for the Jews, but the Catholics had come up with this long ago. That point was one of the main ones that stood out too me.
I was raised Catholic and I had no idea of the hatred toward the Jewish people for the death of Jesus. It really took me back because it took nearly 2000 years for the church to forgive the Jewish people in Vatican II. What was even more suprising was the fact that the yellow badges was not a devolpment of the Nazis but of the Christians.
I was not aware of the fact that the yellow star thr Jews were forced to wear was imposed upon then by the Christians. That was very interesting to hear because for 18 years that's what i thought was the truth. I was aware that there was a long hatred for the Jews, I just didn't know how long it really was.
I originally believed that what the nazis had done was rediculous and the practices used during that timeperiod were practices never used before. I was shocked to find out otherwise. To find out that Jews have been going through this for hundreds and hundreds of years is actually sort of sad. I find it rediculous that something like this went on for so long.
I agree with many people on here that believed Hitler was the first person to hold such views and I was one of those people that was shocked when I heard otherwise.
I learned a lot from this movie about jews and Catholics. I never knew the Catholics hated the Jews so much to the point of burning down synagogues and attacking them in their homeland. Then the Nazis taking the idea of the yellow fabric too I did not know.

The documentary "The Longest Hatred" reinforced what I already knew about anti-semitism, as well as provided me with new information I never knew. The most interesting thing I learned was that the yellow Star of David idea was not first initiated by the Nazis. I never knew that Catholics used this practice before, and I found that very interesting. With every movie we've watched, I've understood a little more about how Hitler and the Nazi's actually did what they did. It'd truly sad that the idea of anti-semitism has been around for so long and has recently shown little to no signs of slowing down.
I agree with what Anna said about the relationship of the Jews and Christians. It is very interesting how two religions which originated from the same beliefs grew so far apart.

I found that the most interesting thing about the film was the reality of humankind's repetition. In school, you always hear about teachers say that history repeats, yet nothing seems as personally resonant than acts of pure hatred or evil so to speak. Thus, when I see that what has in modern times become the absolute epitome of this hatred and evil has been performed multiple times in extremely similar fashion throughout history, it's rather chilling. You know, to see such a disgusting human nature and tendency so raw and ominously cyclic is almost frightening in a way and remarkably eye-opening.
