PERIOD 6 - THE LONGEST HATRED

You recently viewed the PBS documentary The Longest Hatred in class. What did you learn that you did not know before watching the film?

I would say the biggest thing I had learned was how long the hatred of Jews had been around. This is evident because of the yellow star they were forced to wear by both the Nazis and the Catholic which we talked about in class. I have no religious affiliation which is most likely why I was blind to this and why it is so surprising to me.

I never really learned where the Jews had garnered such extreme prejudice. After watching part of the documentary it shocks me that a majority of this hate against the Jews was birthed by early Christians and their beliefs.

I am absolutely disgusted at how long this hatred for Jewish people has been around. I'm also dumbfounded as to how many times this religious discrimination has worked its way into political policy and affected social and economic life as well. They didn't do anything to deserve that. A whole population should not be punished for the alleged actions of a few.

I agree with Nathan in that its terribly said that a faith known for preaching love and acceptance has held such as strong grudge against a group of people that the effects have travelled well into modern society and are even still present today.

The amount of people who have hated Jewish people and for how long they have was astonishing. People judged and hurt others simply based off of their religion and i wasnt aware of how long this had went on for. I was only educated about the Holocaust, the movie taught me more about the history of jews.

I felt a lot of sympathy for the Jewish people that were ostracized. I can't imagine what it would be like for an entire religious group to not have a country to call home and feel like no one wants you there. It's frustrating to know that people treated the Jewish people so badly just because they knew they had the power to do so.

I don't understand why Christians possessed such hatred towards the Jews, especially because their religion originated from Judaism. The jews were treated very harshly and I don't understand why Christians treated them so badly. I would have thought that it would be against their religion to commit some of the actions that they did.

I agree with Abbey on how terrible it was that the Jewish people were judged based off of their religion. I also agree that it's probably not a known fact that the hatred towards the Jewish went on for so long. I think it's important that everyone knows this information so that people can realize how terrible it would be if they were ostracized simply because of their religion.

I thought that the movie was surprising. The movie showed the treatment of the Jewish that they have faced for so long. I never thought that the Christians would be the ones who started hating the Jewish.

i agree with Patrick
i did not know that people hated the jews alot back then and how harshly they treated them.

Nathan Logan said...

I agree with abbey that it was surprising how many people at one time could hate jews, to the point where it was accepted and encouraged

Sami Barbosa said...

I agree with Meghan's comment. I also don't understand how the Jewish were treated badly by the Christians.

I agree with what Nathan said about never really learning the true source of all the hatred people had toward Jews. In the longest hatred I learned how the hatred for the Jews dates back very far. Many people thought Jews drank human blood and killed children as certain rituals. These superstitions took off and many people became anti Semites. One of the popes who helped the Jews was polish which was very rare.

While watching this video I was very surprised about the hatred of the Jewish people. They had done nothing wrong and yet were the repeated victims of blame and torture. It disgusted me to see the horrible things that were done to them simply because of their religious values. I learned many new things from this video that has given me a much better understanding how the Nazis came into power and were able to have such a large following.

I was also surpires like Meghan about the hatred the Christians had towards the Jews. It seems as if their religious beliefs would teach them to act better and more humane towards innocent people.

I was really surprised that Christians have hated Jews for so long. It's so terrible that the Jews were treated so poorly for so long even though they did nothing wrong. The video helped me to understand that anti semitism was around for a very long time before the Holocaust.

Meghan Clarkson said...

I agree with Avalon's comment and cannot imagine what it would be like to not have a place to call home. There weren't many places that Jews were accepted, and I cannot imagine having to feel rejected by so many people everywhere I went.

Rachel Adduci said...

I agree with Avalon about feeling sympathetic towards the Jews. They didn't deserve to be treated that way just because of their religious beliefs

Erin Moore said...

Prior to watching this film, I did not realize the history that Jews had of discrimination. Their discrimination began when they were ordered to wear yellow and the star of David to differentiate them from the catholics. I am completely disgusted with the fact that this discrimination against humans, just like catholics, to be personally victimized based on their beliefs.

Erin Moore said...

I agree with Pat that this was the first time I had ever learned that there was a past of hatred towards judaism and it was not just created by the nazis.

max silverman said...

The biggest thing that I learned was how much of the hatred towards the jews over the years was due to christians. It surprised me that what originally was a sect of judaism grew so radical it wanted to kill its parent religion.

max silverman said...

I agree with Stephanie, I am shocked to know how many times that political policy overtly stated its anti-semitism and that it was publicly accepted.

Jordan DeArmond said...

Before watching the film I did not know that there were negative feelings towards jews at almost every point in history ever since the death of Jesus.

Jordan DeArmond said...

I agree with Pat that it was suprising how long hatred towards Jews has been around as well as how the idea originated long before Hitler about making jewish people wear something so that they could easily be identified.

Anirudh Upadhyayula said...

I did not know that the hatred lasted for that long. I also understand why the Jews were the ones segregated from everyone else in Germany. Since the event of Jesus's death everyone blamed the Jews of the his death as well as all of the bad omens that happened during that time. It was because of these events that helped the Holocaust happen.

Anirudh Upadhyayula said...

I agree with Stephanie. It a sad thing that a few people can impact the lives of over a million people. But it how life was like in those ages.

Ryan Reed-Edwards said...

I learned that the Nazi party was very disorganized and chaotic, which makes the fact that they got into power in Germany and held it for so long even more confusing.

Julia Arsenault said...

I never knew how far back the Jewish hatred went. I kept wondering how back then, no one tried to stop the Christians but during the Holocaust there were a lot of people trying to stop the Nazis. It was sad how long it took to get equality after so many years of hatred. But it was impressive to see how far whave come as a society.

Julia Arsenault said...

I agree with STephanie how the hatred worked its way into every aspect of life

Ryan Reed-Edwards said...

I agree with Patrick, the fact that the Jews were so heavily discriminated against for so long was extremely surprising.

Kylie Bradley said...

I'm not very religious, and know pretty much nothing about how the seperation and formation of religion occured so I found it really interesting to see the backgroud to the stereotypes and prejudices that are used today in reference to specific religions.

Kylie Bradley said...

I can relate to Pat's comment well because I too have no clear religious affiliation so I guess I was blinded to why the Jewish were and still can be seen as horrible and hated.

Patrick Doran said...

I agree with Catherine in how it showed us that the hatred of Jews was not a new concept and that is how they had risen to power.

Cara Berg said...

Along with many other people, I was previously unaware that Christians were the root of hatred towards Jewish people.

Olivia Colby said...

It was interesting to see how such an intense hatred could develop so quickly and grow to be so severe. It is disappointing that human beings could turn on each other like that.

Olivia Colby said...

I agree with Avalon, the film provoked a lot of sympathetic feelings in my opinion for the Jews.
