This week you watched The Grey Zone. The film is based on the eyewitness account of Dr. Miklos Nyiszli, a Hungarian Jew chosen by Josef Mengele to be the head pathologist at Auschwitz. The film showcases the moral delimma of the the Sonderkommando Jews and follows their plans to carry out the armed revolt that took place at Auschwitz. Please post your reflections about the film.

I felt that this film was incredibly disturbing to watch. The portrayal of the way the Nazis cared so little about the preservation of human life made me sick. I also thought of what it would be like as a Jew helping the Nazis in the camps. I thought a lot about whether or not I would do it and I still don't have an answer because I've never actually fought for my life before, and I don't know what state I would be in if I was. The scene at the end of the movie after the uprising was upsetting because the men had been okay with dying in that moment because they had made a difference, and that was okay. If I was in the doctor's position I don't know what I would have done because he didn't necessarily do anything bad but he also did not do anything to help his fellow Jews. If I had that kind of power I think I would have done something with it. This was a powerful and insightful movie on some of the terrors that happened at the camps.
This film was very violent and disturbing. The way that the Nazis acted towards the Jews was very hard to watch. The scene where they shot the Jews one by one was the point where I could really see the cruel and messed up views the Nazis had. They had no respect for life. The fact that they felt like they had to save that little girl was so inspiring. Although they were forced to kill so many people, this could have been their way of making it up. When the girl was shot at the very end it was so disappointing. She made it so far and she felt like she was free, and then it all ended. It was a very disturbing film but taught me a lot about the violence the Nazis used.
I thought this film showed another perspective on the people of the holocaust because in this film we saw people within a camp rebel against their guards. The fact that it was based on true stories and an actual rebel made the theme and goal of the film even more powerful in its message. I thought the goriness of the film aided the message of how brutal and cruel some camps were. The parts that stick out my mind is the actual gas chamber where they explained how people fought to breath and many younger children or weaker women were found at the bottom of the pile. The second point that really scarred an image to my head was how the guard shot each rebelled individual in the head one by one and while doing so the jews were so proud and happy that they made a difference.
I thought the film "The Grey Zone" did a great job of displaying how cruel the Nazi's were. It was very disturbing to see how cruel they were to people of all ages and gender. The heights they would go to, too get info from a Jew or to just to kill them. I thought it was almost refreshing to see Jews rebel in the situation they were in almost to justify what the Nazi's had done to them but not nearly to the same extent. So overall the film did a great job of portraying what went on in the camps and how Jews acted out in some occasions.
The Grey Zone has definitely been one of, if not the most disturbing films that we have watched so far in the course. It was hard to watch and accept the fact that the Jews were first of all, lied to, saying that they were going to be showering when instead they were being brought into a gas chamber. As if that wasn’t cruel enough, anybody in the crowd who had something to say about the situation ended up being shot in the middle of everybody as if it were no problem at all. It is scary to see how easy it was for the Nazis to kill people, even in front of so many people of all ages. It is also hard to watch the self conflict all of the Jews were going through, debating whether or not they should stand up for themselves and the rest of the Jews in order to risk their own life, or whether they would start helping the Nazis if it meant surviving a little longer. That is a decision that nobody should ever have to make. If anybody had any doubts about how harsh the Nazis were, this film sure proves it.
I thought that the film did a good job of portraying how evil the Nazis were and how awful they treated the prisoners. A scene that really stuck in my mind was when the Nazis were shooting the prisoners one by one in order to get information from two women. That scene showed me that the Nazis were willing to take inhumane measures for no important reason and had no respect for the Jews. I also found this film interesting because it gave the perspective of the prisoners and their planned rebellion against the Nazis.
This film, "The Grey Zone" was a very vioelnt and upsetting. This film unlike others did not hide anything. it showed exactly what the Nazis did to the jews, and just how cruel they were. This movie although good in the way of showing watchers a new perspective of what goes on inside the camps, was very hard to watch because it was extremely disturbing. This film defenitly got its point across to its watcher in a very direct way.
The film for me was disturbing to watch but I also saw that the jewish workers actually did revolt. What really got to me was that they were helping the Nazis with the killing of the jews by helping with the gas chambers and they knew they were going to be dead soon too. What I really liked about this film was that they showed how they were fine if they were killed if they destroyed the camp cause they were dying for something and with dignity.
This film to me was by far the most disturbing film we've watched all year. Watching as these hired Jews led their own kind to their deaths, and women were being tortured made me sick to my stomach. It made everything that happened in the holocaust seem a little more real, and it was frightening to think about what actually happened. I couldn't help but feel angry that these men were able to do the things they did without instant resistance, but I realized that the circumstances must have been unreal for them. I keep thinking to myself that if I was there I would have done something, but how can I know for sure? It makes me really think about the decisions I make and the actions I choose to take in life.
This movie was so powerful to me due to the fact that the camp this uprising took place in was the largest of all the concentration camps during the Holocaust. So, just imagining how careful, smart, and truly brave each of the people were who rebelled against the Nazis were really made this movie resonate with me. I think, more importantly than that, this movie was so disturbing and graphic that it was the first time all year I almost got sick to my stomach as I watched one dead body after another being put into the incinerators- by people who could have been their own family. This made me reflect on how I would have acted in this situation, had I been a prisoner in these camps. I'd like to think that I would stand up for myself and help with the rebellion, but it isn't as easy as that, none of us truly know how we would respond under these terrible circumstances.
This film was arguably the most disturbing film we've watched yet this year. The most gruesome part was the scene towards the end when all the Jews were lying down on their stomach and they were shooting them in the back one by one. I dont even want to try to imagine what it would feel like to be lying there knowing that there will be a bullet in your back within a minute or so. This film showed a different perspective than others that we watched, as we saw it from the view of actual prisoners. Although this film was gruesome, it taught me more about the type of violence that the Nazis used against the jews
I thought the Grey Zone was one of the most impactful movies we've watched so far. I was disgusted with the stuff the Germans forced the prisoners to do. It is a completely different type of torture to force someone to kill his own people by running the gas machines. Everything in the camp is depressing and disgusting but the most shocking part is seeing Jews tricking other Jews and leading them to their death inside the gas chambers.
This film did a good job of showing the choices of mindsets you could have while in the death camps. Many Jews who hadn't been there long had the mindset of escape, the Jews who had been their the longest new that escape was impossible and just wanted to do as much damage as possible. I thought many of the scenes in this film were disturbing but they showed how terrible life was for the Jewish people. The part that I got the most out of was the last quote of the movie when the a girl's voice describes what working in the crematorium is like. Knowing that this had all come from a first hand account by the doctor, I wonder what it would be like reliving such terrible memories.
I thought that the move The Grey Zone did a wonderful job showing the cruelty of the nazis and the disturbing nature of their actions through the events in the movie.
I thought that this film was really disturbing and sad to watch. It was hard to watch the movie without feeling really upset. I did enjoy that fact that the jews had an uprising and didn't let the Nazis take away all their power. I thought the most disturbing part was when all the jews were getting shot to get the information out of the women. I think that this movie made me think about what people did to survive a little longer and the choices they had to make.

I think the film is about pain, how the jews destroyed for the soldiers, the jews agaist the soldiers ,the jews they try to save a life a litle girl, and rhe end the soldiers killed the all jews..
I thought that this was a very sad film. It was interesting how the men decided to save the girl after they saw that she survived the gas. I felt like they did so to make up for all of the other killing they had done. It seemed like they felt as if they saved this one life, that they would be less guilty of taking all of the others. I was surprised at how long they were able to keep the girl alive for. And then it was sad how instantly she was killed in the end. The most disturbing part of the movie for me was at the very end when the girl's voice narrated the process the bodies went through after they were put into the ovens. I thought it was really creative to name the movie "The Grey Zone" because of the grey pieces of dust which settled all around the camp from the bodies decomposing in the oven. The piece where they talked about the dust of the bodies really made me feel emersed in an aspect of the film that I would have otherwise not picked up on.
The movie "The Grey Zone" was a very violent and disturbing movie to watch. There were many scenes that were very disturbing to watch. The scene that was the most disturbing for me was the scene were the women were getting shot one by one in order to get the information out of two other women. This was a disturbing scene because itshowed that the nazis would kill innocent jewish people just to get information from other jewish people. I think that the movie did a good job of showing what had happened inside of Aushwitz from the actions of the nazis to the life of the working jewish people inside of the camp.
I thought the film did a great job showing what the process was for the jews to be gassed. Also how they were stripped down and all their belongings were taken away from them. I think that this film was hard to watch but it also shows you their hardships.
I felt this film was extremely affective to watch and while i was watching it i relised how helpless the people in the camps truely were. When i first learned about the holicost i was constantly wondering why the jews didnt revolt or try and save themselves. However i quickely learned how helpless the jews were.
This was a very rough film to watch. I thought that it really showed how difficult life was in the camps and what some Jews did in order to stay alive for one more day. Many parts of the film were disturbing, especially the gas chambers, the torturing, and the shootings that took place in front of everyone. I do not understand how some prisoners kept their spirits up the entire time. They had to deal with so much everyday knowing that they could be killed at any moment. The Nazi officers had no sympathy whatsoever and were not effected by killing thousands of people everyday. I thought it was unbearble to watch Jews throw their fellow prisoners into huge fires. These were their own people. Additonally, the fact that there was a Jewish doctor that worked with the Nazi's in order to save his family shows how far some people went to save their loved ones. I cannot believe he was helping the people that killed his people. This gave me a whole new outlook on the camps.
I feel like the fil we watched was very informative. It really illistrated to me on all the horrible things the Nazi's did. it as a powerful film to watch because it showed how the Jewish people didnt just lie down and take the punishment, it showed a good number of them standing up for themselves.

This film The Grey Zone was a good film to show how the Jews fought back. It was very tragic to watch but was one of the best films. It showed how they lived on the camp and how they were forced to kill there fellow Jewish brothers
