PERIOD 4 - SWING KIDS

You have been watching the film, The Swing Kids. From 1933 to 1939, Nazi Germany declared war on indvidual freedom and demanded total obedience and conformity from all young Germans. What did you feel was the main message of the film and what did you learn that you did not know before watching the film?

I felt that the overall message of the film "Swing Kids" was how capable the Nazis were of brainwashing young Germans into following them. With all of the perks to be a Nazi and the power that came with the position, it was very appealing for the youth to join the organization. Once they were members, they began to listen to and eventually believe the propaganda they were hearing. Before I watched this film, I had never heard of "Swing Kids" before, so that was something new that I learned. I never realized that there was a large movement going on at the same time of the Holocaust to follow the customs of Britain and the United States. I was surprised to see how elaborate the gatherings of young adults interested in swing music and culture were.

I thought the overall message of this film was to never be a bystander and to always stand up for yourself and what you think rather than be brainwashed into something else. I also learned how powerful some one's words can really be. The brainwashing of young German boys happened because of specific word choice and propaganda of the Nazis. In life you can't let others decide who you will become, you have to choose for yourself.

I felt that the overall message of the film "Swing Kids" was that even when you are facing opposition, which in this case would be the Nazis, you should still stick to your own identity, and at this point in the movie, and Thomas has almost completely lost his own identity in the middle of being in the Nazi Youth. This movie also shows how powerful the Nazis were to be able to brainwash the Youths to believe all the propaganda they were hearing.

I believe that the most important message of this film was how easily the Nazis can manipulate the German citizens to join their group. Also once they joined, it was easy for the Nazis to turn the new members into one of them. Up until seeing this movie, I never knew what a Swing Kid was, and I also was unaware of the amount of musical culture occuring during the time of War with Nazis

When watching the movie "Swing Kids" at first we had the group of friends that would do anything for eachother. After the Peter and Thomas go to Nazi camp, Thomas is starting to think like A Nazi and is being brain washed. I think it got to Thomas head because he realized that being a Nazi he had so much freedom and realized no one could stop him. Everyone was realizing he was changing except for him. It was stunning to watch how fast someone could turn.

The movie helped me visualize and have idea and a view of how Germany was during that time. That not everyone lived peacefully and normally while the Jews were being exterminated, that there was an atmosphere of disloyalty and unsafteyiness. People becoming paranoid, and lives governed by fear and following orders.. What an unhappy life that is.

The film "swing kids" displayed how powerful the Nazi's of Germany truly were. It was amazing to see their capability of taking over innocent Germans and forming them into Nazi's. The swing kids in the film were associated with Jews and also they represented individuality. This infuriated the Nazi's and caused them to act out against this group of people no matter even if they were Germans. The message i received was always stand up for yourself and make your own decision no matter who or what is influencing you.

I think that swing Kids had a great morale. They always stood for each other but Peter was determined to believe what he knew was right. He did not want to change because they wanted he stayed a swing kid because he knew it was better than being a HJ or a Nazis

the overall message of the film was to always stay true to what you believe. Peter was forced to join the HJ but he never stopped being a swing kid and wasnt brainwashed. His friend on the other hand started to drift away and believe everything he learnt from the HJ. The message of this film also was that people can be easily manipulated to believe in one thing when they use to thing that thing was wrong. Until i watched this movie i never knew they banned Swing music or even knew what a Swing Kid was

I believe that the main message of the film was to stand up for what you believe in. Thomas and Peter, who were best friends, joined the Nazi Youth. The Nazi’s brainwashed Thomas and completely changed who he was as a person. At the end of the movie Thomas almost ends up choking Peter to death. Peter did not follow or believe what the rest of the Nazis believed. He was still a swing kid and was not brainwashed by the Nazis. Before watching this movie, I did not know that the Nazis had control over small aspects of culture such as music and dancing.

I felt that the main message in swing kids was to stay true to your own beliefs and don’t give in to anybody if it means changing who you are. I thought it was really disturbing to see how a best friendship could change so drastically, based on being brainwashed and forced into the Nazi party. I cannot imagine being restricted and limited to so many things, like the swing clubs, just based on the style of music and dancing that occurred at these venues. I also was surprised to see how oblivious other Germans seemed to be towards all of the attacks that the soldiers in the Nazi Party were doing, whether it was because they didn’t know, or didn’t care.

It was amazing to see how well the Nazis maintained control and the harshness in which they did it. It's hard to imagine living that kind of life where everything you do is under a microscope, but thats how the Germans lived

I thought that the overall message of the film was highlighting the importance of individuality and to avoid conforming to a society or group you don't agree with. Despite being forced into the life of the group that he had grown up to hate, Peter was able to stay true to his beliefs and passions. The most important part of the film was the fact that he ended up standing against the Nazis with his passion and let his voice be heard. The film also portrayed the message of how easy it is for a group to manipulate the minds of a population, and how easily even the most outgoing mind can fall into the trap of conformity.

i think the main message of "swing kids" was how easy it is for a group to manipulate an individual, in this case, how easy it was for the Nazis to manipulate people, and that you should always stand up for yourself and what you believe in. before watching the film i didn't know how much control the Nazis really had over the people and that even swing dancing and music wasn't allowed.

I learned an important lesson from the movie "swing kids". The lesson was that people often dont look into things and the meaning of that they are doing. When the main character saw the person getting shot off the brigde for what appeared to be no reason he did not ask why that was happening. As shown he was affected by what happened and upset by what had occured yet he didnt speak up at all. also the identities of people often changed extremely quickly in the movie. Although I was not there to see the end it seemed as though once the boys were given power they took that and it went to their heads. As a result they began to do things they had said they would never do,including treating their good friend cruelly to the point where he kills himself. I was aware of how little the people around were trying to stop what was occuring but this video really put a image and a situation to that thought. The people of Germany didnt do anything even knowing the situation that was occuring.

I thought it was very enlightening to see Nazi Germany from the perspective of a teenager. I thought it was interesting how the Nazis were preparing for long term Naziism by training, or better yet, brainwashing teenagers. I also thought it was interesting to see really how much power Nazis held for example: Nazis broke up any party they wanted to, beat up any persons they wanted to, and invade any home they wanted. This movie finally showed me the 1st person view of Nazism.

The overall message that I took out of this film was that people with power can tell people with out power what ever they want, even if its not true. What the film is saying is that its your job to figure out what you believe in and to voice your opinion.

I think that the overall message of the film Swing Kids is to always maintain individuality, and to never be a bystander when human beings are being oppressed. From this film, I learned about the ways that the nazis removed individuality from the German population in ways such as controlling the music one might listen to and the way that people would gather to dance and enjoy the music.

I believe the main message pf swing kids was to be yourself and stay true to yourself. We see arvin kill himself because he wasnt allowed to be himself in the nazi society. We also see the main character willingly be taken away because of his individualism. One thing I learned was how strong nazi propaganda was, It turned a swing kid into a full blown jew hater. It was amazing to see the change in his personality after only a few weeks in the nazis.

The main message of this film to me was that bystanders are just as bad as the people who commit the crimes. The swing kids were trying to stand up for whatthey thought was right. Also this movie showed how the Nazi party could easily persuade people into believing they were right about everything.

I think that the main message of this movie is to stay true to what you believe in no matter what the consequences of your decision are. Paul is constantly pressured by his mother, the nazis, and his best friend thomas to conform to the new German principles and become a nazi. At first he is troubled with this decision but he realizes that becoming a nazi would be a disgrace to arvins, his fathers, and his own true beliefs. You can see from this movie that it is possible to stand up for your beliefs and all it takes is a courage. From this movie I learned that most people in Germany did have an idea of what was going on during the Holocaust and many could have done something about it but chose not to. Brave people like Paul and his father are the ones that help to change the world.

I felt like the message of "Swing Kids" was that kids were able to stand up to the Nazi's in different ways. Also that in many cases the Nazi's could change people. I never heard of the swing kids before watching this movie, I also saw Germans could stand up to Hitler.
