Between July 22nd and September 12th of 1942, the German authorities deported more than 400,000 Jews who were living in the Warsaw ghetto. The Germans then began the second phase of their operation to remove the remaining Jews from the Warsaw ghetto on April 19, 1943, the eve of Passover. The renewal of deportations was the signal for an armed uprising within the ghetto. The German command originally estimated that it would only take them a few days to put down the resistance. Standing against tanks and seasoned combat troops, the Uprising lasted for more than a month. In your post cite what you learned that you did not know before watching the film.

I learned that the jews actually had the knowlege and the courage to fight back against the german soilders and war tanks. It took much courage to even fight agaisnt them let alone get the guns from teh polish behind the germans back. I feel that if the uprising didnt fight back then none of the jews wouldve escaped or survived.
I did not know that there were actually Jews that faught back. I think what they did was extremely brave, especially since we know that this did not affect the outcome of the entire thing. They were still able to fight for what they wanted and they tried to stop what they did not want. I agree with Shannon that if they did not have the courage to do this, not as mant people would have survived.
I learned that civilians did try to resist hostile German takeover. I learned that having an unyielding courage and resourceful ideas was to turn a town into a fortress. I learned a ghetto full of people that was unhappy with being a victim or a bystander had the audacity to change things. I learned that although a small resistance had no hope against an empire the people that died as a result lived longer than they would have. The resisters that died fighting died with honor and helped other fighters to survive. I learned that being a resistor is far better than being a victim at any cost.
I agree with Shannon, taking on a tank is no small task. Mindlessly shooting at it won't help and you need tenacity and intelligence to take just one down. I also learned that some Jews were able to fight back against impossible odds.
I had known that the Jews in Warsaw were forced into ghettos and taken away to the camps (from reading Night and Milkweed), but I had no idea what was still going on in the ghetto after the mass deportation. I had never really pictured the victims of the Holocaust being able to fight back in any sort of way like that, I had always thought of large groups of Nazis taking over everything. It was extremely satisfying to watch the resistance fight back after all of the shit that the Nazis had given them, and was also really inspirational. The small group of people was going against an army and resisting longer than the whole rest of Poland. The uprising was really spectacular, and come on, anybody but a Nazi would enjoy watching those smug coats burn and fall to the ground.
Before watching the film, I was unaware that the Jews in the ghettos fought back as much as they did. It was so imporessive seeing the ideas they would come up with and how smart they went about their plans. Their defense plans worked out much better than i expected too, I think that was because they caught the Nazis offguard. I think it must have took a huge amount of courage for the Jews to do this and although it didn't work as well as im sure most of them had hoped, it still did make a difference and show that they could fight back.
I never knew that there were any uprisings in the ghettos that were as heavily armed as this one was. I was surprised at how many weapons and explosives they amassed. They were clearly outnumbered but they still fought for what they believed was theirs.
Before I watched this film I did not think that the Jews fought back as much as the did. I honestly thought that they just gave up or just went with what the Nazi's were doing to stay alive. After watching this film I can know better understand how ruthless the Nazi's were towards the Jews. The Nazi's underestimated the Jews from all the propaganda that was going around and I think that was in the Jewish people's favor because they were well organized. They seemed to be more organized than the Nazi's. I understand that what these Jew's did took an insane amount of courage in what they did standing up to the Nazi's like that.
I agree with Emily about how their ideas and tactics for fighting the Germans were very clever. They also had a lot of courage going up against the German army.
I learned that mass extermination didn't just take place inside concentration camps. Obviously Jewish people weren't always murdered in gas chambers and ovens, but I didn't know officers would order mass murders in a ghetto where people were living. I thought everyone who wasn't beaten or shot in the streets was sent to a cammp. It was wierd to see the Nazi's be so open with destructive nature of their crimes. They were blowing up buildings and causing mass destruction in the middle of the city.
I agree with David becuase even though the people who participated in the resistance didn't survive, they were able to live longer than they would have. They had nothing to lose but their act was still admirable.
Before watching this film, I had no idea that the Jews fought back at all. Everytime a scene came on of the Jews fighting back, I got the goosebumps. I was extremely happy to see them attempting to stand up for themselves. I knew that Jews attempted to run away and escape the ghettos, but I had no idea that the extents went as far as attacking the Germans.
I agree with Emily. I think the Jews definately caught the Germans off guard. The Germans thought they completely controlled the Jews, and that they wouldn't dare fight back the way they did, obviously, the Germans were wrong.
Before watching this film i had no idea this even happend. I was impressed by how they fought for their lives and it was a very moving film. The will they had to keep fighting was amazing and its something that will never be forgotten.
Before watching the film, I thought that the Jews during that time period were all intimidated by the Germans and that they always followed their orders. By watching the film, I learned that the Jews actually fought back at the Germans. I never thought that the Jews would ever have the courage to put up the fight that was seen in the video against the Germans.
I agree with Raunaq because I also thought that the Jews were treated like sheep by the Germans, before watching the video. I always thought that the Jews did whatever the Germans told them to do, when in fact the Jews fought back.
I didnt know that the jews ever actually formed some kind of resistance during their mistreatment in warsaw. This movie showed me that the jews did push back and fight back against their nazi suppressors all while living in the harsh conditions of the ghetto. I also learned how lowly they thought of the allies from the one scene in which they're listening to the radio and talk of the allies comes on. at first one person is excited but then another shoots him down saying "what have they ever done for us".
Before watching the film, I did not know that the there were Jews that fought back against the Nazis. It was very courageous of them to resist the Nazi authority, and I though they were very clever in using underground tunnels and getting guns behind the Nazis' backs. I think that if the Jews decided to give up and not fight back, not as many people would have survived.
I agree with Missy that the Jews were extremely brave and courageous. They fought for their lives and went against the overpowering Nazis, which is no easy feat.
I didn’t realize before seeing the film that the Jews fought back as strongly as they did against the Nazis. From what I’d been taught about the Holocaust prior to this class, the Jews were completely hopeless throughout the entire duration of that period. I’m glad that I know now that they actually stood up for themselves and put up a good fight against the Nazis.
I agree with what Ethan said because watching the Jews put the Nazis through all they had been put through was really inspirational and satisfying.
This movie is becoming one of my favorites. Not only is it entertaining and action packed but it also includes historical fact into the plot to inhance the viewers understanding of the events that transpired in the Warsaw ghetto. This movie also provides the viewer with a more real and visual experience of those events. I like Shannon C. did not know of any specific instance in which the jewish population showed resistance in such a couragous manner towards the nazi reich.
In this film i learned that even when numbers may be against you, with enough courage and confidence, anything is possible. In this film a small amount of jews were taking on the entire german army and yet held them off for an unbelievably long time because of their dedication to resisting
I agree with Mitch and that i also had no idea that there were resistance groups within the ghetto even after the mass deportation occured
Before watching this film, I had no idea that there were resistance groups in the ghetto after the mass deportation of certain ghettos such as the Warsaw ghettos. The Jew's courage was never really an emphasis when learned in the classroom in previous years. It was always all about what Hitler did.
I agree with Allie. Before this class all I had been told were that the Jews were completely hopeless during the Holocaust. But I am thankful to know what really happened during this time period and how the Jews fought back as best they could.
I agree with mike about how the Jews did seem like helpless sheep being exterminated by the nazis before watching this film. This film showed me how Jews stood up and fought for themselves and defended each other in the face of the germans
i learned that not all of the jews stayed bystanders and let the germans do what they wanted. many of them resisted the germans at every chance they were given. I also didnt know that the germans decided to make games out of the jews that they were lining up to shoot. i believe that if many more jews and polish decided to fight the nazi's power and advocate for their freedom, they may have been able to successfully defend themselves. i also agree with David Whalen's comment on how the jews that did resist the germans and died had died with honor and made it possible for many innocent civilians to survive the ordeal.
I learned that the Jews defended themselves and were able to fight back. Like Missy said, what they did was extremely brave. I think it's crazy how they defended themselves from the Nazis because the Nazis are so much more powerful and have actual weapons. Thank goodness they did something about the whole situation.
I never knew that the Jewish people fought back. I find it incredibly brave and admirable of them. They knew that the nazis numbers were far greater than their own and yet they still strategized and fought for their people.
i Learned alot about the process of what happened even though i did not watch the whole film. i also learned of how hitler gave minimal orders to the people who ran the ghettos. I the ghettos where alot different then i thought they would be...it looked more like a war zone then a place to hold the segragated jewish families.
I had no idea that the Jew actually fought back. Also the fact of how organized they where for a rogue militia group of untrained members. It is amazing to me that they could hold off the Germans for a month. It just shows what we as humans are capable of doing if we unite and fight for what we believe is right. It was amazing to me how they where not just able to survive in the already horrible living conditions of the ghettos, but how organized and well executed they were.
I agree with Ethan that it was very satisfying to see that the Jews where able to fight back. I also thoroughly enjoyed when they destroyed the Nazi general's table.
The Warshaw Uprising was a great movie. It taught me that there were many jews who stood up for them selves and fought for their right. They were innocent people who did not desrbe wht happened to them. It was amazing to see what they had to go through just to survive.
I agree with Ethan and not knowing that the jews fought back how they did and how i thought the nazi controlled everything an nobody had ever made a small effort to stand up for them selfs
I learned how resistance groups formed and operated throughout the month long man hunt for innocent Jews in Warsaw, resistance members fought with compassion and dignity especially considering they were fighting for something that they believed in. Seeing this film really gave me more of a clear image of everyday life in Warsaw.
The film the uprising was very interesting to watch because i didn't know that the Jews tried rebelling against the Nazis. It was good to see that they tried fighting for their freedom, and not just following the Nazis every command.
