PERIOD 3 - THE GREY ZONE

This week you watched "The Grey Zone."  The film is based in part on the true story of Dr. Miklos Nyiszli, a Hungarian Jew chosen by Josef Mengele to be the head pathologist at Auschwitz.  The film showcases the moral delimma of the the Sonderkommando Jews and follows their plans to carry out the only armed revolt that took place at Auschwitz. Please post your reflections about the film.

Dr. Nyiszli is pictured in the photo wearing the white lab coat when U.S. troops liberated Donau concentration camp.

The "Grey Zone" has impacted me the most out of all the movies we have seen over the duration of this course. Throughout this film, the Sonderkommando Jews were seen as people who were on the side of the Nazis. If they did not do their duty of burning the bodies of their fellow Jews, they would be killed as well. They had choices and decisions to make every second of the movie. They had to watch the innocent Jewish people get killed knowing they would eventually be killed as well. The way that the innocent Jewish people were killed was horrible to watch especially watching the little kids get killed. There is no reason for them to be dying at such a young age. The ending of the movie put everything into perspective for me when the young girl started running and the German Officer shot her. They had saved her from the gas chambers and then made her watch all of the other Jews get shot one by one. If I was in the little girl`s position, I would not know what to do. She, along with all the other Jews, had to make choices and decisions that affected their lives.

I found this film to both be very informative while being very disturbing at the same time. Prior to viewing this film I had little to no knowledge regarding the Sonderkommando Jews used during the Holocaust. I found that their existence and usage was a horribly genius idea. What I mean be that is I believe it was a very good idea from the Nazi point of view but from a point of view of someone studying this event their existence is horrible to think about. Nazi's knew that these people would do anything to live just a little bit longer so they had Jewish people helping to run the camps for 4 months added to their lives instead of dying immediately. I did however like that when the Sonderkommando Jews realized that their 4 month time was coming to an end they did not just stand there and wait to die but took action. They had ammo, guns and explosives hidden away and fought the Nazi forces before they were killed. They not only took many Nazi's with them before they died but also destroyed one of the crematoriums in the camp. This crematorium was never rebuilt and consequently slowed the mechanized killing process that the Nazi's had created and used.

The Grey Zone was a great movie. I really liked the fact how it was from the view of the Jew who was working for the Nazis. These people were extremely hated for their "betrayal" to the faith. This Movie however, showed how their were forced to do it, and surviving just like themselves. They even rebelled to stop the Nazis and destroy their ovens. When one of the sonderkommandos found the girl alive in the gas chamber and then proceeded to keep her alive was brillant. I admit i thought the Jewish "traitors" were people thinking of themselves and not doing the right thing. The Sonderkommandos and Jewish police did not like what they did and the movie projected that well.

The Movie The Grey Zone was an extremely powerful movie to watch, even the third time around. It really showed the emotional stress that the sonderkommando units had to go through. Not only did they have to go through the greif of their people dying, but they had to go through the great emotional pain involved in being forced to kill them. The thoughts that must have gone through their minds while they were walking their families to the gas chanmbers must have been horrible, and knowing what their fate was going to be must of been truly horrible. I do not know how these people were able to live with themselves.

The Grey Zone was definitely the most graphic film we've watched so far. I was absolutely horrified by the brutal and inhumane treatment of completely innocent people; it simply isn't right. Even though I had read about the Sonderkommando before, it is very different than watching them be forced to carry out the gruesome and vile deeds. What especially stood out to me was the torture of the two girls. I couldn't even watch it, it was just awful. The one thing I liked about this movie was that it proved that no matter what the circumstances are, you can still do a good thing. The Sonderkommando were willing to risk everything and ultimately gave up their lives to save the young girl. They also resisted the Nazis through the short lived resistance and were able to destroy one of the massive ovens.
