PERIOD 3 - THE UPRISING!

Between July 22nd and September 12th of 1942, the German authorities deported more than 400,000 Jews who were living in the Warsaw ghetto. The Germans then began the second phase of their operation to remove the remaining Jews from the Warsaw ghetto on April 19, 1943, the eve of Passover. The renewal of deportations was the signal for an armed uprising within the ghetto. The German command originally estimated that it would only take them a few days to put down the resistance. Standing against tanks and seasoned combat troops, the Uprising lasted for more than a month. In your post cite what you learned that you did not know before watching the film.

Before watching this film, I had no idea that the Jews ever tried to fight against the Nazis. I assumed that the Nazis just took control over all the Jews and that the Jews had no chances to fight make. I was very surprised that the Jews showed resistance. It was great to see them all come together for the same cause. This movie really opened my eyes about the Jewish people in that period of time and what they had to go through. It again showed the horrible living conditions they had to live in. The Jews overcame their struggles to fight against the Nazis. This movie really showed me how the Jews tried to stick up for themselves.

After having learned so much about the complete power of the Nazis, I was surprised to learn that the Jews were able to retaliate for more than a month. I didn't know that they were able to find secret places where they were able to hold meetings about their uprising. Previous movies we watched showed that the Jews were easily overcome by the Nazis and that there was little to no hope. This movie was a little more optimistic in that the Jews wouldn't go down without and fight. Their extreme efforts make me want to be strong and stand up for what I believe in next time I face a difficult situation. If they could fight to the very end, they proved that anyone can.

I had watched "The Uprising" a long time ago but was too young to fully understand what the movie was portraying. Watching it again made me realize how much of a resistance there was by the Jews and how they fought until their deaths. It was hard to watch parts of the movie because it showed the true emotions, feelings, and every day struggles that the Jews had to go through. It was also hard to see the Jews lose their love for life; the Germans had destroyed the Jews physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Although I did write my term paper on Mordechai, the main character in the movie, I still did learn a lot from the movie. I did not know the many details of the Jewish resistance fighters and techniques. I did not know that they actively snuck weapons across the ghetto boarders dressed as Aryans. I did not know of the many effective fighting techniques that the Jews used. Such as firing down on soldiers from roof tops and planting explosives in the ground where they will walk and using makeshift grenades. I also did not know of the many underground passages that they used to hide and regroup in. I also got a better sense of what these very brave Jewish freedom fighters actually dealt with during their fight to the death after watching this film.

From watching this film, I learned that Jewish people fought against the Nazis even until their death. This film really showed how hard it was for the Jewish people to stay alive, keep fighting, keep hope, and keep determination. I could not picture in my mind how many people must have died until I saw the last scene we watched today where only a few people were left in the ghetto. This film is one of the most emotional films I have seen.

Before I saw the movie, I thought that the Jewish people did not fight back and were not able to fight back. This film showed how they were able to fight back and how hard it was for them to stay alive and keep fighting the Nazis. I did not know that they built underground bunkers to hide in and they had a shot at leaving the ghetto through the sewage systems. The scene in the movie was very sad when they could have escaped, but they did not know and they did not have enough time to escape the poison gas.

I had no idea there was ever such a resistance. I was unaware such a powerful resistance had taken place. I am happy to see how well the Jews did against the Nazi's considering the conditions they were put into. The movie was sad because of the reality of what the Jewish people had to go through. I just wished they had been even more successful against the Nazi's. I also found it interesting how they had people going in and out of the ghettos carrying things such as weapons. I had no idea that people smuggled things into the ghettos and such fights had taken place.

I was amazed by the resistance efforts of the Jews. Even though it seemed nearly impossible to have such an impact and hold off the Nazis for so long, they did. Despite having none of the comforts of their old lives and having the threat of violent death, they completely dedicated their lives to the cause and worked as hard as they could. They refused to go down without a fight. Their efforts were truly inspiring and reveal the courage and bravery of the Jews, even though the odds were against them.

I did not realize how much the Jews actually fought back against the Nazi's. I thought that the jews were deported with little conflict. It also makes me think that there are a lot more untold stories of jewish bravery during the Holocaust. I find it amazing that people outside of the ghetto would risk everything to help the jews inside the ghetto. I was also amazed by the clever tatics used by the Jews to fight off the Germans.

I was surprised to see the success, albeit exaggerated in the film, of the Jews against the Nazis. Not only was it inspiring, but it was incredible to see such visceral defense of one's "honor," as Ross would say. I had never known that not only was there such a well-organized and well-manned resistance, but that there was prolonged success for that resistance. It's rather unbelievable. I was also pleased to see Cary Elwes getting some camera time. He's just delightful.

Before watching the film I thought all the Jews would just take all the crap they got from the Nazis. I thought they would just let them take lives of others. I thought Jews would also have no one of getting the weapons they did. Also I thought it was good that they would fight back and kill the Nazis and give them what they deserve. I thought it was a hard time though for the Jews to fight and live in the conditions they were living in. They were living underground were it was really hot and many people were in there that were part of the ghetto. They also sent some of their group to the other side were there weren't Jews to help them get weapons and try to help them escape and get away from the Nazis. It also showed how the Jews would do anything to get their freedom back no matter what conditions they had and whatever they needed to do to get freedom.

I agree with Dan that it was inspiring how the Jews fought back against the Nazis. It mad you want to fight for something you want or something you believe in.

First of all I had no idea that the Jewish people in the Warsaw Ghetto actually fought back against the Nazis. It was amazing how organized the ZOB was and how their people were able to contact the outside world to get weapons, food, and other supplies. It is just so cool that they were able to stand up for themselves and give the Nazis a run for their money.

I learned so much from watching this film. I had seen it in Hebrew school years ago, but did not remember many of the details, and was not old enough to fully understand what was happening. The film gave a great sense of what extremes the Polish Jews had to go to in order to survive. I noticed that as I watched, I felt like I was on the team of the Jews, almost rooting for them in every battle. I say this meaning that I almost believed this was just another war movie, not noticing that these were normal civilians who created their own militia. It's not only inspiring, but it's truly amazing how long and well the Jews were able to hold off the Nazis. I'm lucky enough to be traveling to Warsaw next week and to be able to see first-hand the streets we just viewed.

I had no idea that the Jews fought back at all, let alone last a month resisting the Nazis. These people gave their all to defending their people, and helping the next generation of Jews. I also didn't know that they were getting weapons from outside countries. I didn't think they had access to those kinds of resources let alone find a time and place to meet with the other countries. I also didn't know about the conditions they lived in. I saw it for the first time in the Pianist, but this movie too, truly showed what life was like.

After watching Uprising, I learned that the Jewish people of the Warsaw ghetto were determined to fight off the Germans. It was how the Jews fought back that was a new to me. They had well thought out plans, and designated areas for certain people, as well as explosives which is something I never knew. As far as I was concerned the Nazis steamrolled over the Jewish people without any hiccups. Uprising gave me a new sense of the power of the Jewish people back in the 1940's and how they were able to last a month fighting the Nazi army.

I had watched this film before back in 8th grade when I was in Hebrew school, but when entering Facing History & Ourselves, I had forgotten that the Jews were abel to retalliate. I was so impressed and also surprised about how they were abel to come to gether and fight back. I was in shock as to how horrible the living conditions were for these Jews and what they had to suffer through. I was happy, though to see the Jews working hard to strengthen their fighting skills, smuggling weapons, and ultimately ovetaking a good amount of the Nazis.

I agree with Laura, because she was also in my Hebrew school class. I agree that I was too young to fully understand the extent at which the Jews faught back.Watching it for a second time made me proud to see these innocent Jews resisting against the violence by the Nazis.

Before seeing this film I had no idea about the effort to fight back against the Nazis. This was very surprising to me and this movie gave a great amount of information about the lives of Jewish people in the ghettos. Evertime the Jews faught back and killed Nazi soldiers it was a great feeling, as bad as that may sound. The fact that the Jews could keep there spirits up after all of the stuff they went through amazes me and shows how brave some people are. These people faught for what they believed them and they set an example of being the resistance in situations that seemed impossible to survive.

I learned that even against all odds all it takes is determination and spirit to fight for your life and the right to live. I was inspiredby the resistance that even though they were outnumbered, they were able to stratgically retaliate and become successful for as long as they lived. I waa able to see what kind of heart and determination it takes to survive and to not take anything for granted in life. the Jewish resistance had so much heart and a strong belief in their faith that nothing was going to bring them down.

I feel the same way as Laura. some of the scenes were hard to watch. especially when the resistance was in the sewars and baby almost drwoned by the water that was being flodded in by the Nazi soldiers.

What I learned from this film was just about everything that it was about. I knew of the resistance in the Netherlands from a book I had read a few years ago, but had never heard of the Warsaw Rebellion. The utter dehumanization and humiliation of the Jewish people by the Nazis was made even more clear to me, as I had seen various images of the death camps, etc., but I had never really covered what went on inside of the ghettos. This film really brought to light a lot of things that I had never even thought of happening, and has really helped me continue to build a detailed image of the time period in my mind.

Before I watched this movie I had no idea that some of the jews fought back. I had a conversation with Jesse and he told me he actually wrote his paper on one of the guys who was in the movie who fought back and I thought it was really interesting. I thought they were really brave and I was surprised to see that they fought for so long.

I agree with Jesse I didn't know about nay of their techniques especially because I had no idea any of them fought back, but I thought it was amazing that they snuck in weapons and all the underground passages. They worked really hard to try to survive and fight for their rights/ life.

Before watching this fild i had no information that the jewish people form a group and stood up to the Nazis.I always thought that the Americans ended this horrible event.Only because America is always shown as the "Hero" or the Country to look up to in any situation. But after watching this film i learned that the jewish people had amazing courage and bravery to stand up to thousands and thousands of Nazis without knowing what would happen to them. They basically went into gunfights with the Nazis blind but had a smart strategy every single time.Wich shows me that Americans are not the only people that can be the "Hero" or the role models.

Before watching the Uprising, i thought that the Nazi's always had complete control over the JEwish people. I did not realize that some of them fought back and even after watching this movie i don't know how the JEwish people stayed so strong. I was surprised that these people were courageous enough to step up to such a large powerful army. This movie is awfully sad, but to see the Jewish people want to die with honor and pride shows how much they truly loved their religion and would fight till the end. This in a way makes me happy because it shows they are standing up for what they believe in.

The uprising was an amazing movie. I liked it better than the pianist because it showed the fight back where in the previous movie, the vivid horrible-ness of the nazi's actions where the main point. Watching people fight back and have hope through that entire experience was nothing less than moving. I agree with Jenna where, you never hear about anyone fighting back, only about how people snuck away and the risk other "germans" took to hide run aways. It made me want to help them fight back and prove not just to that town that they were much stronger than the nazi but also Hitler himself! the reisitance won so many fights against Nazi police and army that other commanders had to come in! it was amazing! some parts where almost laughable. I enjoyed watching how they took the video of the "internal Jew". they where so f***ing stupid and irrating! it made me personally so frustrated and i realize that it was the time period, but its not an excuse. anyway .i liked the movie it was very reveailing and it was an excellent movie to show to get the point acorss of how hard and difficult the jewish people had it.
