PERIOD 7 - "THE WARSAW UPRISING"

Between July 22 and September 12, 1942, the German authorities deported or murdered around 300,000 Jews in the Warsaw ghetto. The Germans began the operation to destroy the remaining Jews in the Warsaw ghetto on April 19, 1943, the eve of Passover. The renewal of deportations was the signal for an armed uprising within the ghetto. The Uprising lasted for more than a month. The German forces originally estimated that it would only last a few days. In your post cite what you learned that you did not know before watching the film "UPRISING!".

I was releived to see an Uprising that was well conducted. the resistance was dominiating in each battle by surpize attacks from the buildings. A scene poped up that was interesting. One of the organizers of uprising was beating and ruthlessly attacking a German solier it showed the anger and his ability to attack like a wild animal would. Why because survival requires acting in a primative manner.

This is the most disterbing film we've watched in class. I did not know that any person who was associated with Jewish people would be killed/beaten in public. I did not know there actually was a small group of Jewish people who fought back against the Nazis without help from the Jewish government. It was surprising to realize how much crap the Jewish race had to put up with/go through; I give them credit for not backing down completely.

In my opinion this was one of the more powerful films we've seen in class. I knew that there had been some sort of uprising within the Warsaw ghetto before, but the scale and precision in which it was conducted was surprising to me. I had thought before that a few people had smuggled in pistols or other small arnaments of the sort, not rifles and machine guns such as those depicted in the film. It was an honorable effort for them to organize such an uprising in the name of the jewish people.

The film showed a significant group of Jews in an organized group uprising. I learned that it started because the Jewish counselor refused to sign a document that would deport a group of Jewish children to the concentration camps. Because of that the German soldiers marched into the ghetto to make the Jews pay, and cruelly killed whoever they saw. The Jewish uprising began because they could just not handle watching their people be slaughtered for no reason. I thought it was telling that the only reason they lost was because the Germans had access to bigger and better weapons.

I agree with Robbie that this movie was one of the most powerful that we have watched this year. I assumed that there was some resistance from the Jewish people, but never realized to what extent the resistance would occur. I found myself very moved by the Warsaw Ghetto's fight regardless of the consequences as well as their strategy involved weapons transportation.

I agree with Christine and Robbie that this film is very powerful and disturbing. Yet it is also very personal and it grabs your interest, involving you in the film, making feel for the characters and understand their dire circumstances. It took such unbelievable courage, strength and cunning skill to command and operate a unit within the ghetto without the Germans or Jewish police finding out. It seems even harder for those entrusted with the task or acquiring and delivering weapons and arms to their people, while stuck living outside the ghetto, pretending not to be Jewish while fellow Poles try to turn them in.

I have learned quite a lot from watching this movie. I think the most important thing that I have learned is that the Jewish people refused to be deported or murdered without a fight. I didn't realize that people were able to get into and out of the ghetto itno the city of Warsaw and I also didn't know just how close to the city the ghetto was. I was surprised in the scene with the church when you could see smoke pouring into the window because they were that close to the fighting. I was very surprised that they were able to smuggle in such a large amount of weapons. I think that this movie is one of the better ones we've seen this year because even though it is extremely sad in parts, it grabs your attention while showing what really happened in.

After watching the film "Uprising" i leaerned that many Jews wanted to revolt against their NAzi oppresors but the Jewish council did not endors this revolt so the Jews were forced to find their own weapons. I agree with Matt that it is a relief to learn that the Jews did try to stand up for themselves despite the fact that they were vastly outnumbered.

I think it is amazing that this small resistance group inside the Warsaw Ghetto was able to have the success they did. The revolt was not organized by any authority group such as the Jewish Council, and they had almost no access to the world outside of the ghetto, yet they were able to acquire weapons and ammunition, and they had a great strategy in order to hold off the Nazis for as long as they could. The fact that this group of Jews was so outnumbered and had far fewer weapons and explosives shows that when people are fighting for a cause, they can accomplish almost anything.

It got me almost excited to see the rebellion of the Jews in the film Uprising. As horrible as the whole extermination of Jews and anyone asssociated with Jews in the Warsaw ghetto, I was a little releived to see that they did try to fight back because i didnt know that before.

I agree with Annie, it was exciteing to see the Jews fighting back and allvthat went into it. This is because, it showed that they were not going to be walked all over without putting up some sort of a fight. Not only did they put up a fight, but I beleive they stuned the Nazis and surprised a lot of people.

The film showed a group of Jews organizing an uprising in the ghetto they were placed in.I never realized how organized and violent the actual uprisings in the Warsaw ghetto were. They had people on the outside who were giving them information and weaponry. The only reason the Jews began losing was due to the fact the Germans had better access to weapons.

I was amazed with the power that the Jews had over the Germans when they fought back. They organized a group of people that had no experience in fighting before and succeeded in fighting off a legitimate army. The effort in order to be able to fight back involved so much surprising to me and also the lengths that people went through to help their peoples cause, like smuggling guns in with dead bodies.

This film is a very inspirational in a way. The ability of the Jewish people, in the face relentless and countless opposition is a testament to the bravery and determination of the Jewish. Watching the film, I had no idea about the capabilities of the Jewish people. They were able to take out armored tanks and artillery, among hundreds of German soldiers. The whole uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto was a powerful statement by the Jews that were forced to reside there.

I enjoyed watching this film as it was very interesting and also taught me a lot about the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto. I learned how well conducted the uprising was and how they were able to defeat a much larger German military. I was suprised that the Germans did not have that much better of weaponry as the Jews dominated most of the battles.

I learned a great deal from watching this film. Before this film, I had never watched anything on Jewish resistance. Most traditional films that have been shown in school usually only show the Nazis terrorizing the Jews, and make the Jewish people out to be and to of never to have advocated for themselves, but this film portrayed them in a new light. I also learned of how close the ghetto was to the other parts of the city and how close the fighting was to the non-Jewish population.

Personally, this is one of the saddest movies we have seen thus far. I had no idea how well organized they were in their resistance against the Nazis. They were creative with it and also I didn't know that they smuggled in machine guns and what not. I also thought it would of been more difficult for someone to sneak over to the Aryan side, but it was easy for some jews to pass off as belongers of that side.
