The Gestapo - Period 2
In the film, A Warning from History, you saw a segment on the Gestapo and an interview that was conducted with a woman who had turned in her neighbor while living in Nazi Germany. Post a reflective comment on what you learned from this particular segment as well as what you thought was the most important point(s)made during this segment on the Gestapo. From the video segment we saw about the woman who ratted out her neighbor was shocking because it showed how people actualy supported hittler and his antisemitism.The most importan t point of the segment was that the gestapo didnt target only jewish people but german people as well

I learned that there were not as many Gestapo officals as there were thought to be. So when people got arrested by the Gestapo officals they were denounced. People were arrested for even the little things, such as talking about what was happening. A lot of people feared the Gestapo people when really they did not have to do so.

I would like to say that I learned that in Nazi Germany people were others out. I believe this is because of fear of being captured yourself. People probably said "well if the Gestapo were focused on other people they wouldn't have time to hurt me." Also it was intresting how the woman who turned in her neighbore to the Gestapo openly confessed to it. I believe if they had interviewed her right after the war she would've denied it because she could go to jail for it. Now that the war has been over for a long time many people will tell you things without hesitation because they probably won't go to jail for it.
The film segment was rather disturbing because it illustrated that the prime perpetrators of the Gestapo madness were the very German citizens themselves. People would rat on their own family members to either move the focus of the Gestapo away from them or perhaps to serve some other selfish need. Perhaps the most horrifying piece of the film was that a woman, who was confronted with the false account she wrote about a loner in the village, which ultimately caused the demise of the person, did not understand her crime. She felt that people are bringing the holocaust up for "no good reason" when the fact of the matter is that she should live up to the guilty actions she committed. Its simply scary that some people who were involved in the discrimination and horrors of Hitler's time have not learned the terrible lesson. I shudder to even imagine that such an atrocity can be so quickly forgotten.

The film segment shows how Hitler expressed his power on Germans to bring them to the point of writing out their own neighbors. the lady in the movie does not remember sending any letter like that because there is no pride of having done that in today's world; unlike back then that could have been her insurance from being suspected of being a traitor or non German.

The film made a lasting impression on me. It made me understand the complete mind control that Hitler had over the people. Friends would rat eachother out, and risk the potential death of a friend, in order to please Hitler and his sick wishes. The people would carefully watch each word spoked and report any suspicious activity. In the segment, the lady that was interviewed, vigorously denied any affiliation with the incident. She was ashamed of what she had done and refused to believe that she committed such an atrocity. I thought that the most interesting fact that I learned was that 80%-90% of the crimes reported were from the ordinary citizens and not the Gestapo.

I was very moved by the movie Warning in history. I was suprised when the women was confronted with the letter she still wanted to deny it even though she said it was her signature. The way that people would rat there neighbors out just so they were able to be safe is ridiculous. I don't think that people should do that and instead should have helped them self. Also you saw how powerful hitler was and what he got people to do. I really enhjoyed watching the movie and it taught me manty things.
